Sports video game giant EA has announced that the newest version of their long-running FIFA soccer game franchise is a record-breaker.
And it's not even out in the U.S. yet.
According to EA, FIFA 10 has sold over 1.7 million units in its first two weeks of retail availability in Europe, making the fastest-selling sports game of all time. The previous record-holder? EA won't say, but I'd bet my lucky cleats it's a Madden.
EA Sports president Peter Moore was understandably thrilled.
"We were confident that FIFA 10 would be a hit, and this week fans across Europe have shown just how much they love this game," he said in a press release. "We are incredibly proud of FIFA 10 and this kick-off for great, authentic football competition."
Its numbers are certainly impressive. Since launching, over 10 million online matches have been played with over 155,000 players simultaneously online during peak hours. Though soccer is a much bigger deal outside the U.S., we imagine those numbers will spike a bit when FIFA 10 is released in North America on October 20.
Earlier this year, EA scored another "fastest-selling ever" title with its downloadable war game, Battlefield 1943. – Videogames
