Ethiopian Airlines and Lufthansa extend partnership

ethiopianreview.com | November 23rd, 2009

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA (EAL) — Ethiopian Airlines and Lufthansa have further enhanced their cooperation by extending their code share partnership agreement thereby adding flexibility and more convenience to the services of their respective customers.

Ethiopian Airlines expanded its operations during the 2009/10 winter season by increasing flight frequencies to eleven of its destinations in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. For the eastern region of the continent, for example, Ethiopian now offers four additional weekly flights to Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam providing more choices of flights and convenient connections for Lufthansa and Ethiopian customers. Passengers planning to travel to these destinations will undoubtedly have more flexibility and choices with such additional frequencies.

Currently, Ethiopian and Lufthansa jointly offer eight weekly flights between Addis Ababa and Frankfurt; and, as of June 2010 both carriers will provide ten weekly flights for the same sector.

Ethiopian has been offering uninterrupted flight services from its home base, Addis Ababa, to Frankfurt since 1958. The code share partnership agreement between Ethiopian and Lufthansa has further strengthened Ethiopian's position in the European and US markets through the extensive network of Lufthansa, while it creates additional possibilities for Lufthansa to reach the Eastern African markets.

Ethiopian has been operating code share flights with Lufthansa since April 04, 2008. The flights under such code share arrangement are now operating on the Addis Ababa-Frankfurt route and points beyond Frankfurt and Addis Ababa. As a result, Ethiopian’s ShebaMiles members are now able to earn/use their award miles on the international routes of Lufthansa. Likewise, Lufthansa’s Miles & More members accrue miles on Ethiopian’s flights.
