Head of the EU delegation in Ethiopia, Ambassador Tim Clarke, said today that the international community strongly believes that the opposition parties should take up their seats in the parliament and work in a constructive way... Dialogue and peaceful negotiations are the way to overcome disputes ... ENA
It seems that to Tim Clarke there is a lower standard of democracy for Ethiopia. It is becoming clear that he and his U.S. counterpart want the Meles regime to stay in power no matter what the people's choice is.
To allow EPRDF to stay in power for five more years knowing that it has lost the election will be the worst option, and the opposition leaders understand that," CUD official Ato Andargachew Tsige told Ethiopian Review and Tensae Radio last night at a teleconference
Ethiopian demonstration in front of the Belarus Embassy, Washington DC
Ethiopians in Norway formed Anti-Yara Award Committee. It's reported that Meles Zenawi will be in Norway on September 3 to receive the Yara award.
"The opposition were told by the prime minister they have to make a choice in the coming days on whether they are in or out of the process and face the consequences," Clarke said.
Why do the opposition parties continue to deal with this man, Tim Clarke? His intention is clear: to ignore the people's choice and allow Meles to continue to rule. And why do the opposition parties meet with Meles Zenawi and allow themselves to be lectured by a mass murderer who is rejected by the people? The opposition parties are now on the wrong path, a path that will lead to more suffering, repression and misery for the people of Ethiopia. People need to start speaking out before it's too late. The opposition parties need to start holding town hall meetings and hear from the people who voted for them.
Instead of being an impartial observer and mediator, EU's head of delegation in Ethiopia, Ambassador Clarke, is trying to force the opposition parties to accept the Election Board's decision. The ambassador is destroying the small democratic gain in our country that was obtained by the sacrifice of many fellow citizens. Please write or call Ambassador Tim Clarke and ask him to stop facilitating illegitimate election victory for the Meles dictatorial regime.
Phone: 011-251-61-25-11
Please also give moral support and encouragement to CUD and UEDF to stay firm in their position that the people of Ethiopia have the same right as the people of Ukraine, Georgia and other countries to exercise their constitutional rights to conduct all forms of peaceful activities, such as general strikes and demonstrations, to make sure that the choice they made on May 15, 2005, is respected. Please act now before it's too late.

After the 2000 elections, the Addis Ababa City Council elected the city's leaders in a similar way, but a few months later Meles Zenawi disbanded the Council, fired the mayor, and appointed his own mayor and other officials. The CUD leadership made a decision to continue to participate in the vote probing process. Tomorrow, 26 investigative teams composed of representatives of opposition parties, the ruling party and the Election Board will be sent to different regions of the country. Last Saturday, CUD leader Ato Hailu Shawel had said that unless all detained CUD members are released he will call off the meetings with the Election Board. It's not clear what made CUD decide to continue with the probing process. The government continues to arrest more CUD members, let alone release those it is holding. ER was unable today to contact Ato Gizachew Shiferraw, who is responsible for CUD's election related affairs. He's been on meetings all day.
