Ethiopia: Haromaya University distributes disease resistant crop to farmers
Dire Dawa – The Haromaya University announced that it has it has been distributing high yield and disease resistant crop varieties among farmers.
Agriculture College Dean with the University, Dr. Kinde Tesfaye told WIC that new bean, pea and haricot bean varieties released after six years of research at the university have been approved by the national seed Committee.
Dr. Kinde said that the high yield and disease resistant varieties have been multiplied at the university and are being distributed among farmers for the current production season.
The new bean variety called “Gatchena," gives up to 30 quintals of yield per hectare, he added.
Similarly, the newly released white pea and haricot bean varieties yield 25 and 35 quintals per hectare, respectively, according to the Dean. Currently the university is distributing 650 quintals of select seed among 600 farmers, he said.
