Culture of fish consumption being widely introduced in Eritrea

Asmara – The culture of fish consumption is being widely introduced in all the administrative regions of the country, said Mr. Temesgen Hagos, manager of the Eritrean Marine Products Corporation.

He pointed out that expensive fish products which are highly demanded in the international market such as Tuna, Chernia, Coral Fish, King Fish, Grouper, Snapper, Derek, Kun Fish, Barracuda and Jack, among other are being supplied in the local market at a low price. The move is part and parcel of the ongoing endeavors towards achieving food security, Mr. Temesgen added.

Moreover, he explained that there are plans to open fish meat selling centers in all the regions in the near future, and that preparations have already been finalized to open centers in different parts of Asmara, including Gejeret, Akria and Paradizo. Efforts are also being stepped up to strengthen the activities of the one in Markato, he added. Mr. Temesgen further indicated that extensive campaigns would be conducted to raise public awareness regarding the significance of fish consumption.

Noting that there are qualified professionals who are engaged in closely supervising and controlling the quality of fish products, the manager said that the production of fish has shown an increase of 400% in mid-2009 compared to the previous year. Mr. Temesgen called on the general public to make good use of available fish market which is being subsidized by the Government at substantial expenditure.
