Ethiopian Review Editorial
The Shaleqa mafia is an unholy alliance of:
1) The former chairman of Kinijit North America Shaleqa Yoseph Yazew, and Ato Moges Brook, who is the shaleqa's friend of over 30 years from their EDU days. These two individuals are long time friends of Hailu Shawel and have close family ties. The two individuals allegedly have diverted over $1 million of Kinijit's funds to accounts they personally control.
2) Former president of the Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA), Dr Taye Woldesemayat, who once proudly announced in a public meeting that he did not vote for Kinijit in the 2005 elections. Last month, the ETA executive committee fired Taye (see here) for, among other things, not handing over financial and other forms of assistance he had received on behalf of the ETA from teachers' association in other countries.
3) Radio talk show host and former abiyot tebaqi (Derg's revolutionary guard) Merchaw Sinishaw who used to torture high school kids suspected of being EPRP members.
4) Woyanne web sites.
5) EPRP web sites such as asimba.org.
6) Millionaire businessman Solomon Bekele who is now practically out of the group because of his recent change of heart.
What made these groups with conflicting interests come together?
For Shaleqa Yoseph and Ato Moges, who formed this unholy alliance, their sole and overriding objective at this point is to create diversion through chaos so that the Kinijit leadership will be unable to conduct an investigation into their corruption. They have found a perfect weapon in the unemployed and power-hungry Taye Woldesemayat. Shaleqa Yoseph put Taye on salary and is sending him from city to city falsely presenting himself as the head of Kinijit in the Diaspora. Now all Shaleqa Yoseph and Ato Moges are doing is just sit back and watch Taye carry out their mission.
Before accepting the invitation to join the shaleqa group, Dr Taye was busy attending EPRP- sponsored public meetings and attacking the jailed Kinijit leaders. After being anointed as chairman of the Kinijit International Council (shaleqa's Trojan horse), Dr Taye brought with him several of his friends who are either members of or have close ties to EPRP. In short, the KIC is an EPRP outfit that is being financed by Shaleqa Yoseph and Ato Moges with the money they stole from Kinijit.
The KIC serves two purposes and two different interests:
1) to create diversion for Shaleqa Yoseph and Ato Moges;
2) to facilitate the Taye-EPRP take over of Kinijit.
For Shaleqa Yoseph and Ato Moges, it is a matter of covering up their corruption — not a quest for power. For Taye and EPRP, it is a matter of hijacking Kinijit. Both of them are exploiting Ato Hailu's poor health and shaky state of mind.
The Shaleqa-Taye-EPRP plan
This is what will happen in the next few weeks:
1) Ato Hailu and friends (the shaleqa group), with the help of the EPRP media, will start labeling members of the Kinijit executive committee as Woyanne agents and sympathizers. They will say that Ato Hailu signed the apology letter that got him and others out of jail after being pressured by the other Kinijit officials. They will talk about how Ato Hailu is the only leader with the conviction to stand up against Woyanne, bla bla bla…
2) Next, after gauging the effectiveness of their propaganda, Ato Hailu will declare that he has dismissed most of the Kinijit executive committee members. He believes, and is being told by the shaleqa group, that he has the power to decide any thing on behalf of Kinijit by himself.
3) In about six month or less, Hailu Shawel will announce that due to his poor health he is unable to remain as chairman and will appoint Taye Woldesemayat to replace him.
Ethiopian Review has been informed about this plan from a source inside the shaleqa group who is against it. According to the source, all the mediation, negotiation, excuses, etc. are just delaying tactics to buy time until Dr Taye and crew prepare the ground for the next step.
Some parts of this plan are already being implemented. They have started making various accusations against the executive committee members in private meetings with small groups of individuals. Soon EPRP media outlets will be filled with attacks against Kinijit Vice President Bertukan Mideska and the other members of the executive committee.
The effort to save Hailu Shawel
The concern of many people is not that Kinijit will be harmed or divided because of what Shaleqa Yoseph, Ato Moges, and Dr Taye are doing now taking advantage of Ato Hailu's condition. Last Sunday's successful public meeting in Washington DC has demonstrated that individual leaders may come and go, but Kinijit will move forward because it is built on principles rather than personalities. Kinijit supporters were also reassured that the Kinijit leadership is united and intact. The concern of most Kinijit supporters now is not Kinijit's integrity or viability, but Ato Hailu's legacy. It would be indeed unfortunate if the first chairman of Kinijit leaves the party without proper farewell, even worse, in disgrace.
Ato Solomon Bekele and a few others who became aware of the Shaleqa-Taye-EPRP plan are now making an effort to save Hailu Shawel from disgracing himself in such a way. Ato Hailu's legacy and their own reputation is at stake. Ato Solomon has been imploring Hailu Shawel to re-establish contacts with the executive committee and attend public meetings together. In a further attempt to change Ato Hailu's mind, yesterday, Solomon Bekele had arranged a meeting between Hailu Shawel and Aklog Lemeneh, chairman of Kinijit North America chapters. During the meeting yesterday (Tuesday), Ato Aklog advised him that he is making a grave mistake and that he should change course before more harm is done. He invited Ato Hailu to join the delegation at the scheduled public meeting in Boston this coming weekend. Ato Hailu said he will think about it. Don't count on that.
Over the weekend, some prominent Ethiopians who reside in the Washington DC area, including Ambassador Ayalew Mandefro and Dr Gebreye Wolde-Rufael, had a chance to meet with Ato Hailu. They begged him to reconcile his differences with the executive committee — to no avail. Ato Hailu kept repeating to them the false information he is being fed by Dr Taye and the shaleqa group. These individuals left the meeting terribly disappointed.
It is Ato Hailu's frailty that Taye and the shaleqa are exploiting to their advantage. He is now completely encircled by the shaleqa group and has very limited access to individuals outside of the group. They carry his phone so unless he makes calls himself, no one can reach him by phone other than selected individuals. Many long-time friends of Ato Hailu are unable to reach him. When some individuals get a chance to see him, the people Dr Taye put around Ato Hailu, such as Assefa Dires, get nervous and find some reason to interrupt the meeting. All Ethiopian media are prevented from interviewing him. The only media personality who is allowed to interview Ato Hailu is Merchaw. Taye and the shaleqa have managed to control Ato Hailu's every movement. He is now virtually a hostage. As a result, the likelihood that the effort of Solomon Bekele, Aklog Lemeneh and other will succeed is little to none.
According to inside sources, the shaleqa group held a meeting Monday night with Ato Hailu. They proposed to him to take a break for two weeks and then come back to Washington DC for a meeting on Sept. 30 with invited individuals only. Similar closed meetings would be held in other cities, too, according to the proposal. Dr Taye argued that public meetings that are open to every one would expose Ato Hailu to insults. Ato Hailu agreed and has accepted the proposal. This morning Hailu Shawel went to Reagan Airport accompanied by Shaleqa Yoseph, Solomon Bekele and Merchaw Sinishaw and took off for Minneapolis.
Why Shaleqa, Taye and EPRP will not succeed
It is because the Kinijit central committee members are united in their stand against any form of lawlessness and dictatorship inside the party. With the exception of Shaleqa Getachew Mengiste, who is currently in South Africa on a working visiting leading a Kinijit delegation, none of the other executive committee members approve what Ato Hailu is doing now. Some try to portray that the leadership crisis inside Kinijit is caused by a conflict between "the Hailu and the Berhanu factions." This is far from the truth. There is no such a thing. The leadership problem is caused by the disagreement between Ato Hailu and two or three individuals on one side, and the whole Kinijit leadership, on the other. Simply put, the root cause of the leadership crisis inside Kinijit is Hailu Shawel's recent dictatorial behavior that is encouraged and promoted by the shaleqa group. The strongest opposition to Ato Hailu's disregard for the executive committee decisions is coming from members of his own former party, AEUP.
The Kinijit leadership has so far been extremely patient with Ato Hailu and his crooked friends. But not for long. The leadership needs to take steps to protect the party's credibility and integrity.
More than the leadership, the people of Ethiopia would not allow the Shaleqa-Taye-EPRP plan to succeed. Taye and his EPRP buddies will be challenged and confronted every step of the way with the same vigor and energy Woyanne is being fought. In short, the Taye-EPRP plan to hijack Kinijit has a snowball's chance in hell.
As to saving Ato Hailu's legacy, it is in his hands and the hands of those who truly care for him, if he has such friends around him. The effort has already started by some. Let's hope they will succeed.

It is sad that Ato Hailu is not in a position to examine the stories of both sides and decide for himself. This great man is hijacked by these "leba" and they are deciding for him what to do and what to say. Mirchaw and Tensaye Radio are doing their best to ridicule the other leaders. "wusha bebelabet yichohal". At this time, they are talking shaleqa's words not their own becuase shaleqa is paying them to do so. Bedru (Bednu) Adem is also getting some "firifari" from shaleqa for his "Tej" and he is also barking with Mirchaw (this info is from credible sources). I was laughing how the two radio hosts change their tone and start blaming Birtukan and Dr. Berhanu. They were presented as heoroes few weeks ago. Do these people know what they are talking; "hodam lehudu sil yimotal". I hope Ato Hailu will get out of these groups and realize the reality. By then, I don't know where the Shalqa mafia will hide.
Old habits die hard. These old people could not learn the new procedures of democracy. It seems that they are thinking with the mindset of 1970s and could not adjust themselves with the current situation. They should either update themselves or leave the party with grace for the new generation. Ethiopians are now smarter than their leaders; we know who is pro-democracy and who is pro-dictatorial. Hey! Wakeup oldies and try to walk on the same road as the others.

Hailu Shawel, himself is the master mind behind the Shaleqa
group. The man has the makings of a fascist dictator and he is mortally intimidated by Berhanu's brain. Now he is turning on Bertukan and telling some fantastic lies.
Once he gets back to Ethiopia, he is going to leave the party disgraced like Lidetu. He is intoxicated by power and
unable to realize that Ethiopians have put their past behind them and will never replace one dictator with another, no matter who he is.

This is an interesting assessment. I am wondering where Hailu Shawel's head is - Did he go to prison for two with this mentality? Regardless of Hailu shawel's loss of judgement, when are they resolving the money issue? Is there a way to separate the Hailu Shawel issue and go right into the finances? Shouldn't Kinigit deligation be busy looking into the money issue. The most importat question of most of us is where is the money and who is held accountable, sued if necessary etc.. vs. who is influencing Hailu Shawel etc.

I thank Elias for his bold decision in discussing the current crisis in Kinijit leadership. Some might accuse him of taking sides, but most of his points should be taken seriously as many people are awaiting for an impasse to the current problem.
My message is to Engineer Hailu Shawel if he gets a chance to read it as he seems to be in the middle of the current leadership crisis.
I heard that you are a strong leader who speaks his mind even against the dergue. If that is the case, please take the time to weigh both sides of the story and make an informed decision that truly reflects your conviction and the needs of the Ethiopia people. True leadership is always tested in hard times and it with honesty, courage, integrity, and independent thinking that you could pass those challenges. You need to discuss this problem with your friends who had been in jail with you for almost 2 years and make a sound judgement based on the facts. We are hoping that you will reconcile your differences as soon as possible and lead the Ethiopian people in their struggle for freedom and democracy.
It is only when you do the right thing and make a sound judgement we will honor your sacrifices and leadership.

Thank you for your fairly detailed editorial comment. It surely has helped me gain insight into assessing personality charactersics of leadership positions. I have long belived that the kinijit leadership has a unique strength of sacrificing all its comfort, fame in positional aspirations and even personal wealth and health for the people who elected them believing that they will make a difference in their lives. Your editorial reflects some shades of humanly weaknesses that kinijit leadership is being tested by. Please, Please kinijit do not submit to these weaknesses, I know deep down you strongly hold that your primary concern is Ethiopia and the people you vowed to serve. God help you maintain that vow of sacrifice.

The Shaleqa group as you said is prolonging the investigation into the stolen money. EPRP's interest is not power at this point, they know they cannot attain that and they do not care For Dr. Taye either. Rather Taye is a pawn for their scheme, dividing Kinijit and weakening it for eventual downfall. But why? They know that they cannot come to power; they have tried for over thirty years and there is no reason for them to be successful at this time.
For them politics as usual is a way life, it is a means of survival. If the Ethiopian main political problems are solved they are out of business, that they will not allow. You need to know any political discourse in which they have no hand in it is always attacked. I think Ethiopians all over the world are following everything very closely. We are very comforted and encouraged by the performance of the Kinijit delegation so far. Their messages are uplifting and moving. We also admire their reserved reaction towards some of the unfortunate actions of the chairman of Kiniit.
I recommend they continue their work as scheduled and be not diverted from their focus. All over the place Ethiopians are longing to see them. They want to hear from them. They want to have hope. They want to hear something that show light. As was seen in Washington DC, they will be welcomed as heroes in Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Minessota ..and many more ..
Regarding ATo Hailu Shawel, I think we need to pray for his health and well-being. Other than that, if he join his friends who languished in Kaliti fine. If not there is no reason we loose time and energy thinking about one individual. Let him do whatever he want and say whatever he want. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH …LET US MOVE FORWARD WITH KINIJIT.

That really was what I was thinking .The effort that started to regroup other members of CUD in Ethiopia by the the released leaders which is agood sign is not swallowable by Ato Hailu ( shaleqa backed conspiracy ). The different stands that he made before coming here is also other sign that he is trapped by the gang group which is infact hard to conclude that he is cheated . We should know the other members of central committe are are far more responsible for the reputation of the party among ethiopians . And we are ready to stand by their sides . It is well known that Lidetu was famous before the election and was immediately outcast by the people . We Ethiopians are waiting for the official resolution of the central committe regarding him. I advice him to detach from the Dergue residues which is being taken the only and little weakness of Kinijit by some doughtful Ethiopians!

I am so ashamed to read such a disgraceful story about Engineer Hailu, whom the Editor once used to appraise him if not worship him. Dear editor, I think you missed a big (betam betam BIG) point when you were writing the article. You portrayed Ato Hailu as if he is a person of not him own mind. This person has led CUD at its harsh times. If not all Ethiopians, there are many people here and in the motherland who are really proud of his decision making skills and services. I believe you, the editor, was one of those who used to say that Engineer is such a democratic leader with a huge integrity and determination. But now you flipped around and you already stated to labeling him as a dictator…etc.
Yes! Of course, you have your own website to say what you wanted to say, but Engineer has none. Because you have the tools, you already started accusing the person in a condition that he is not there to defend himself. I don’t doubt that you know that the Engineer is well respected by the Ethiopian people as well as by many people abroad. Even if you think that the Engineer is going in the wrong direction, PLEASE FOR THE GOD’S SAKE, SELE EGZIABHERE BELEHI, SELE WEDITWA EMAMA ETHIOPIA, please do not hurry to such an accusation.
Ato Hailu is sick physically, but I can bet with my life that he is NOT such a guy that you portrayed in your article. He along with the CUD leader have a great deal of dignity and able to discuss differences. Please give them time to discuss about it.
On your article, you tried to predict what is going to happen to CUD in the future. You should always be an optimist for anything good to happened to the party, which in turn to Ethiopia. If what you predicted is going to happen, it is mostly due to the spread of such uncharacteristic and unpleasant prediction or accusation that YOU and Other peoples started to spread around.
I am not a journalist, I am a student. If I were you, and if I wanted to do my job, I would rather stay away from accusation. I would argue very much that what you are doing is not the profession of Journalism.
AGAIN, these leaders, ofcourse including Engineer Hailu, are able to weigh what is good for Ethiopian and for Kinigit.

i think you did a great job not only telling us the true reality within this saga. i apploud you also for being to democratic and having that professional realisim in you article. To tell you the truth i am not upset by the leader Halu shawel after all he new what sort of politics he's old mate are playing. let's not forget this individuals stubed him while he was in jail by looting the parties money and giving that a bad image for kinijit.
I personally believe there is no conflict between Halu Shawel and the rest of the kinijit leaders, i think Halu shawel is engineering a big drama to expose those thief indivisuals whom backstubed him while he was sitting in kalti!!
I say this with confience Halu knows the characteristic of Burtkan,Berhanu,Araya and the whole kinijit camp, he is well aware of there devoted fight for democracy and at the same time Halu shawel know deep down in his belief the onlyway forward is to expose individuals radio stations and old parties of what they really are and one way of doing this is ofcurse to act dumb and play the role of not a leader at least for the time being.
I mean this leaders spent 2 years with each other i am sure they understand one another more than we know them. I also believe they know where the problem lies particularly with dispora politics they have to assure people that kinijit is a party now lead with corrpution and one man show but also with "Collective leadership".

Kinijit is a democratic organization and will remain that way.Thousands were imprisoned and hundreds were killed for freedom and equality in Ethiopia not for individual's ego.I hope Ato.Hailu will not commit his political sucide at this time.With or without him the struggle will continue.The biggest enemy of Ethiopia is woyanne and we have to focus on the big picture.

Great Great Great analysis Elias you did an excellent analysis, I thank you so much. I am realy amazed by Eng. Hailus confused standing, I had never expected him to be challanged by individulas and believed him as a man of principle. If a leader gets biased by indviduals and do not have self reliance how can he be Kinijit's leader? Never! Kinjit is a diciplined non dictatorial, modern politics and should not have a place for such kind of non confident individuals. Eng. hailu is insulting the Ethiopian people if he continues with the mafias like Shaleqa, and Mirchaw. He should examine with whom he is dealing with. As every one know Mirchaw he is a kind of person who doe not have any human personality and tries to be significant every where but people do not give him attention due to his past and present trash personality. I was the supporter of this great man Hailu. I was following his political carrier with admiration since the inception of AAPO and then lastly KINIJIT. I also still remember the stance that Taye had all the time. I remember taye (He was that time chairman of Ethiopian Teachers Association) had rediculed over AAPO while siting beside Ato Hailu. It was a shock for me that I couldn't get out of my mind till now. But right now, this same person claims to be the chief of Kinijit North America. What a disgrace for Kinijit!. I hope, Ato Hailu would make the right decision and show the Tayes the way where they rightfully belong to, i.e. throw out of our kinijit.

I do not agree with you that Ato Hailu is manipulated by Shaleka and his group. Hailu Shawel wanted things to be this way. IT IS EITHER HAILU'S WAY OR THE HIGHWAY. The only solution for Kinijit to do now is get a new leader, period.

I read the current conditon of Kinijit.P/s don't rush to come up with some sort of conclusion.I think the Ethiopian people will get a chance to see how bad poletics is. I think the call to throw out Dr. Taye from Kinijit is baseless, since he has never been in Kinijit to start with. There is no connection between Taye and Kinijit except his earlier demeaning about the organization. The idea of Taye as a Kinijit savior exists only and only in the sick minds of the Shaleqa group and morons like Dr. Bezabeh and ShaleQa Admsse (another Shaleqa?). Ato Elias your substative analysis will help Ethiopians to see the whole picture. Ato Hailu is moving in the wrong direction with malicious groups as your analysis put it in black and white. A number of evidences indicate that Ato Hailu is against rules and regulations of the CUD. Moreover, he is contravening decisions of the party taken democratically by authorized bodies (The Supreme Council and The Executive Committee). Now, he must be stopped by formal means. He must be stopped by internally built mechanisms. He must be stopped by strong insiders. He must be stopped by "peoples' power" of members, supporters and sympathizers. I am not your regular fan. I am not a weyane either. Despite these facts, I somewhat agree with your insightful and well-researched analysis of the Shaleqa-Taye-EPRP trio. I have studied it myself.
First the appointment of Taye, based on his resume, looks like he was about to save the diaspora movement. But as time goes on, I noticed many things. The EPRP websites have gone crazy supporting him and his new KIC at the same time putting down KIL members. I very much remember EPRP was somewhat disinterested and even opposed to many aspects of Kinijit. But all of a sudden, they started supporting KIC like crazy. I became very suspicious about the role of Taye as being an agent of EPRP going in to destroy Kinijit from within. As you know, the leaders were all in prison and it was very hard to figure out who is doing what before they were released. But now every thing is crystal clear.
The most interesting and insightful part of your analysis is how all these different people with conflicting interests came together.
My conclusion about all these is that we are involved in a movement for freedom and democracy with people and groups who have no clue what democracy is all about. They have their own understanding of democracy that fits their personal backgrounds and dreams that may have no connection whatsoever with the interests of the nation as a whole. They reduced the whole movement to personlities, family ties, and long-time friendships at the expense of our martyrs like Shibre Desalegn who paid dearly for democracy, peace, and freedom. For them, the sacrifice that is made is a ladder to get to their personal dreams. They have no shame when they ignore all these and reduce the struggle to their narrow and selfish interests. They are blind, intoxicated and shameless.
I think we should give Hailu Shawel to correct his mistakes and save himself. I think he is in delusion about his perception of himself. I think he should clearly understand that we are not in the business of manufacturing dictators after dictators. We have created two of them-Meles and Mengistu. We are not going to creat a new one who is asking to give up our rights for the few challenges he faced in our name. Hailu Showel is asking us to believe in him rather than the principles of democracy that we got together for in the first place. I am worried for the fact that we have people who think they are fighting for democracy even though they have no clue what democracy is all about. This is scary if such people get to power.

Lately I am thinking…like…what the heck!!
If it was not for Hailu Shawel's handeling of the situation in 2005, Lidetu would still have been in Kinijit. The engineer and the leaders of AAPO before him, the one with the feudalistic title, tormented Lidetu so much that he could not take it no more. He was thrown to Woyane jails several times because of as a result of fabricated charges not by Woyane but the then AAPO leadership. some fitawrari whatever…I forgot his name.
Listening to Ato Hailu Shawel's interview by Mirchaw and Tigre-hater-turned radio host "Yewarkaw", I am recognizing some patterns of behavior resurfacing.
Don't get me wrong about Lidetu. I was not convinced as to why he tried to break away his former party (UEDP-Medihin) from CUD. He should have resigned from CUD as individual.

could you shed some light as to why Eng. Hailu falied to come with the delegation in the first place? Mircahw did not ask him in his interview. I bleleive that is the key issue. Was he told by the Shaleqa group not to be part of the delegation? Or was it another reason. Our infortmaion about his not comig with the group was that he had more important unfinished jobs to do! and yet he came to the US a few days later! Although we have to wait for more facts before we reach to a conclusion, sometimes I have a feeling, that Ato Hailu may have some involvement in the corruption of the Shaleqa group. Other ways it is getting difficult to explain his actions.
None of the Kinijit executive committee has attacked or even criticized Ato Shawel, but he started criticizing them starting from Addis. And now he is doing it again on Mirchaw's radio. Why can't he simply talk to them, if there is a problem instead of continuously criticizing them on public, even for decisions they made collectively. I don't understand that. That is why I've started asking questions about his involvement in the Shaleqa-corruption.
Who knows? But until facts are found, it is only my assumption. I hope he will not follow the corrupt and dictatorial path of the Shaleqa group. That would be very very sad for a person, who contributed so much for the democratic process in Ethiopia.

As an Ethiopian and an opposition, I respect him but he was unfit from the beginning to lead such awsome movement for democracy. He was always dictatorial. He has never been effective leader. I don't think Kinjits problem is external. It is internal problem. You can't blame all this external forces for all problems of this organization. I think it is time for the leaders to seat and find out what the real problem is and fix it. If not, Kinijit will be history. I have just had a chance to listen Ato Hailu's interview on Tensae Radio. If you get a chance please do listen to it. From his voice it seems he is well. Thanks to God.
Now back to some of the points he raised.
1. He mentioned that Kinijit is democratic and have principles. He said that no individual is above the party. He declared that KINIJIT BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE and that there is no other option for KINIJIT to follow what the people want.
2. He said that Kinijit is one. As there are problems and differences in any problem, he says that there are also problems within Kinijit. He explained that in a democracy there are disagreements, differences and heated exchanges. That must not and should not consider as "division". According to him all these are normal. He says:” two or three individuals may create problems". "They will be dealt" he says.
3. He emphasized that all accounts must be audited by independent auditors and investigated in detail.
4. He at the beginning of his interview announced clearly and unambiguously that there will be no appointment and that chapters must be organized independently and democratically. (Though at the end he contradicted himself)
I honestly like what I have heard. If Ato Hailu truly believes in this, I cannot comprehend why it was difficult to solve outstanding minor differences with his colleagues. If what he said is truly what he believes in then , then was he afraid to come in the same house and discuss with his friends from Kaliti ? Why does he limit and surround himself with individuals that has been violating for the last two years what he just said ?
What we all wanted from the get go is for the people's money be audited and returned back. What we wanted from the get go is to establish democracy within our chapter and within or North America Chapter Association in a democratic and transparent manner. What we wanted from the get go is for the consorted attacks on other Kinijit members be stopped. It is not us who have been regularly attacking individuals on radio and on renegade websites(like kinijit.org, debteraw, ethiolion ..). It is not us who have been attacking strong Kinijit Supporters as "weyanes". It is not us who illegally patented the name “Kinijit” and Kinijit logo and sue those who voluntarily support Kinijit for helping Kinijit.
By the way when I say I like what I have heard, I do not mean I like it all. There are one minor item and another major item that Ato Hailu mention that I reject.
Let me start with the minor item. He mentioned that some Kinijit leaders want to come to America because they have not seen America before. To quote him " be weret mekniyat". I think he may be referring to w/t Birtukan for the others at one time were all out of the country. I call this arrogance and "tiebit". That can be considered also as an insult to millions of Ethiopians. Because he is rich he may have come to America multiple times before. However, who gave him the authority to talk with disrespect against those who have never been out from the country like this ? SHAME ON HIM.
The major item is his endorsement of the group that calls itself "KIC" but many calls it "Keyissi".
Ato Hailu after telling us that we will have no-one to be above us, that chapters must be organized on their own democratically, he makes a shift and tell us that there is KIC. WHAT IS KIC ? He said that the political leadership will be in Addis Ababa. So KIC is not doing any political work. If political works are not done then the other work items that is left are supports. That are the roles of Chapters, which Ato Hailu explained that they must choose their own leader.
I AM CONFUSED HERE . I think At Hailu is mixing everything and must correct the fact. He cannot have it both ways. I think he must be honest and announce that there is no KIC. This way one of the major differences he has with the other Kinijit delegation will be solved.
Other than that relatively speaking, I give a C to Ato Hailu speech. It was not confrontational and deteriorating. I applaud his attempt to calm the people. I applaud his confidence that problems will be solved. I will share his optimism and pray for it.
Will Ato Hailu do as he says ? I do not know. His separate schedule to address Ethiopians is a clear indication that he may have chosen the "go it alone" approach. He will have meetings in 5 cities organized mainly by EPRP folks. I think he must scrap this non-sense and immediately join his colleagues. "Ersu binekachewoum ye etiopia hezb yakebrachewal. Ersu ke enersu guar bale mesratu erasun newou miyawaredewu".
Last I would like to say few words about the tensae radio interviewer. The radio host, Ato yewarkaw Mengistu, was intentionally probing Ato Hailu so that he can give sparking and divisive comments. Their intent was to get something bad from
Ato Hailu against the other leaders and widen more the crisis. Fortunately Ato Hailu was calm and except of couple of minor guffs were very civil. This is telling me that there are some groups (out of which the Tensae radio reporters and producers and those who sponsor them, who may be up to not the strength of Kinijit but its demise. THEY WILL FAIL. WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT THE PEOPLE KNOWS ABOUT IT AND BE VIGILANT AGAINST THEIR POISONOUS AND DIRTY PROPOGANDA CAMPAIGNS.

The best next move on the part of Kinijit in order to gain credibility from formost the Ethiopian people and even the world (however is watching; i.e. US Watch Groups) is to do the following:
1) Hold a town hall meeting to address all issues that have been raging til now…mainly the Shaleqa Group's misactions as well as Taye needs to be there.
2) The decision process should be open to the public and although may sound controversial, it will make news and give the Kinijit a level of democratic transparancy that they have not reached before. They need to do such things in order to build on their international credibility which needs some work still in my humble opinion.
3) The chapters around the country including around the world should take part in knowing all the facts and use Kinijit's democratic principles in voting the wrong doers out of office and out of Kinit and in return out of Ethiopian Politics.
This move I think would give Kinijit again, credibility and perhaps send more disatisfied non EPRDF Ethiopians to Kinijit in the diaspora such as Oromos and Tigreans as well.

It sometimes looks funny. Eng. Hailu's stand during the turmoil was one of the major reasons for the ~2yr jail time, all the unaccounted or accounted killings and total destruction of the Kinijit grassroots network that was growing strong by then. Now, he can't compromise with other executive members. Whoever people are around him telling whatever lies, he should judge as a matured politician, if he actually is. Otherwise, I say that what has to be done should be done now, even excluding him, though it certainly is very sad.

Great editorial analysis based on facts. I take exception to your description of the 'millionare businessman' though. In his latest role as an advisor of Ato Showel, is he really having 'change of heart'as you indicated or practicing the "…delaying tactic to buy time until Dr. Taye & crew prepare the groundwork" as you correctly observed? I believe it is the later. I would like to remind you that the so called millionare is at the center of this unforunate though temporary debacle which is diverting Kinjit's focus from the external to the internal to the delight of the Woyanes. He is the architect, as one writer put it, of all this mess from the get go. All the running around he is doing now is to save himself, and not Ato Hailu. He never had any respect for Ato Hailu before the formation of KIL. Aware of this, Ato Hailu did not even want to meet with this individual during his last visit to the USA, i.e. before his incarceration. So, Elias, in stead of being deceived by the chameleonic personality of this feuadalist individual, find out what makes him tick. For sure, it is not the cause that Kinjit stands for.

Elias thx a lot that is the core problem of all this theater.There is no another group which challenge Hailu Shawels leadership inside kinijit,those who are singing this old song are the hidden hijakers of the struggle with there preplanned destrecutive mission only.It is time now to confront these evils where ever they are .

Quick Intervention Needed:
1.Kinijit Ethiopia Leaders sit together urgently and comission an independent professional investigation on the problems in the North American Support groups,
2. Get yourself a travel agent and conitnue your \'Thank you\'mission to the different states, don\'t take sides on the diaspora conflict before getting the comission\'s report\'
3. Don\'t ever discuss \'Leadership Issues\'while in the US. COme back home to your main constituency first. You are essentially our representatives!
4. Stay intact and Ethiopian ! Don\'t forget that you have sacrificed your personal health,time,energy and life for Ethiopia!
5. The quote for the day \" Let us hang together, other wise they will hang us separatley \" If you don\'t show your unity today you will never unite Ethiopians! You will all fail if one group succeds!

Your timely and cautious editorial analysis serving as a green-light to all concerned has clicked my mind to think of the following question: WHAT COULD ONE LEARN FROM DR TAYE’S CURRENT EXPERIENCE WITH ETA? The pronoun ONE refers to not only the rank and file but also the senior leaders including Eng. Hailu Shawel, Dr Berhanu Nega, W/rit Bertukan Midekssa and many others.
According to the suspension statement endorsed by the ETA officials in August this year as enclosed herewith, Dr Taye W/Semayat has quitted his contact with them for more than two years and yet he has been managing some affairs in the name of ETA. (It seems that they have some reservations to disclose which readers could guess as it might be the money he has collected in the name of ETA and possibly the mistrust he has developed with the international community.) The suspension letter states that in breach of the ETA bye-laws, in his capacity as ETA president, he has been issuing some, among many other things, declarations without the knowledge of the National Executive Board. I asked an insider to let me know one instance of this experience. According to my informat, it has something to do with a nominal organization. If you remember Dr Taye used to tell people that there was a civil forum supposedly composed of Ethiopian Youth International Association, Ethiopian Register, Ethiopian National Congress, Ethiopian-American Society, Ethiopian Free Press Journalist Association, and ETA to which he was claming himself acting as a chairman. It is sadly regrettable to learn that none of the ETA Executive members was aware of this fake composition. Taye concocted it merely to serve him to build up his image and at the same time to snatch funds from the innocent. This is Taye who has no a pinch of respect for ETA, for his colleagues and for many more citizens paying hardship to contribute their shares to the struggle at homeland. This is Taye who never hesitates to let down even the ETA so long as his personal advantage is being promoted. To the surprise of all concerned, he has been elected as a leader to the so called a political party KIC without officially publicizing his resignation of presidency from ETA. The damage would be very serious as the government could use it as good excuse to ban the legal status of the Association altogether, by accusing it of playing double standard. Taye has made the distrust worse when he gave deaf ears to the request of the head office for submission of his resignation letter.
The ETA officials have made it crystal clear that had Dr Taye done at least the last option, submission of resignation letter, they would have honored him a graceful farewell that fairly meets his previous contribution to the struggle despite his misconducts committed repeatedly. But, he has preferred to ignore their humble request. Instead, he has been too quick to declare a call for Ethiopian teachers and ETA to cooperate him whenever he is in need, pretending as if he would work with their leaders smoothly. In his surprising call, he has left his old and new positions ambiguous. This implies that Dr Taye intends to ride two horses at same time, to remain as an ETA president and as the same time to act as a chairman of the newly introduced political group, KIC. He has been intending to enjoy a marriage of convenience with two parties, civil and political organizations, at the expense of ETA and the leadership. This is nothing but an irresponsible act of deception that equates to a political prostitution to be condemned with the strongest possible term.
Had it not been for the wise disciplinary measure of the ETA officials, this irresponsible act of Taye would have directly affected the legal status of the Association. As the officials have adequately explained it, this is a fatal misbehaving that violates a trade union principle in general and that of the ETA bye-laws in particular for which the officials are responsible to defend to the best of their capacity. This is a question of an independent trade unionism principle which cannot be subject to any form of give and take negotiation. They cannot compromise on this issue. They are also equally responsible to justify their decision for suspending Taye which they did with concrete and careful statements that help all concerned know facts on the ground including some uncovered misbehaviors of Dr Taye.
It is my believe that such a courageous act gives a good lesson to public figures to behave themselves, and be accountable whenever they run public affairs. It further helps the rank and file to be cautious whom to appoint as a leader for the struggle to defend their national interest.
Apart from discharging their responsibility firmly and courageously in this remarkable manner, just calling a spade a spade, the ETA officials never stand in Taye’s way of joining a political group of his choice. They are not showing any animosity to Taye either. What they are against is his intention to play double standard. What they are questioning is the purity of his motive to join a party he has been publicly propagating against. Hence what are the lessons we could learn further from this experience?
