Kenya MPs divided over ICC on post-elections violence probe

Nairobi — Even with the extra time given to Kenya by the International Criminal Court to form a local tribunal on the post election violence, Members of Parliament are still sharply divided over the matter.

Some MPs have dismissed Justice Minister Mutula Kilonzo’s recommendation for a judicial mechanism as a delay tactic meant to circumvent the Hague option.

Gachoka Member of Parliament Mutava Musyimi Tuesday called for the establishment of a national reconciliation and cohesion ministry saying the one charged with that task has not been effective.

The debate on whether the perpetrators of the 2007 post election violence should be tried through a local tribunal or the Hague has been gaining momentum with the tirade this time around directed at Kilonzo.

Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara urged the government not to waste any more time on a matter that parliament had already made its stand on.

The option of a local tribunal seems to be an attempt in futility as members of parliament have vowed to shoot down the bill or other amendments related to a local tribunal once brought to back to parliament.

Gachoka member of parliament Mutava Musyimi says the ministry of justice, constitutional affairs and national cohesion has faired poorly in fostering national healing.

He is also calling for the inclusion of the public, private sector and civil society in the formation of a local tribunal.
