Uganda: MPs disagree over Museveni speech

MPS yesterday expressed mixed reactions to President Yoweri Museveni’s speech, as the debate of the State-of-the-Nation address kicked off.

Whereas some praised the President for a clear exposition of the state of the country, others slammed figures he advanced as evidence of economic growth.

The opposition argued that the figures did not reflect unemployment and the effects of the global credit crunch that has seen a reduction in remittance from workers abroad.

Yahaya Gudoi (NRM) said the country had opened its borders to foreigners, especially Asians, in the guise of attracting investments.

He said the foreigners had taken over small businesses like shops, which Ugandans can run.

Loy Kiryapaawo (NRM) said ritual murderers are set free on bail which does not deter others.

However, Tunde Nalubega (NRM) lauded the President for focusing on job creation.

She also called for a minimum wage for workers.

Franca Akello (FDC) appealed to the Government to increase teachers’ salaries.

She said with 200,000 per month, primary school teachers live from hand to mouth.

Issa Kikungwe (DP) said the address was long and boring. He disputed the President’s rosy picture of growth amid the credit crunch, saying Ugandans abroad were losing jobs.
