Sudan opposition Umma Party plans rare anti-government protest
Khartoum — Mariam al-Mahdi, the daughter of Umma leader Sadig al-Mahdi, said the constitution had not been adjusted to take in the delays, so it still said the government should disband in July, for elections in July.
She added opposition groups were preparing to release a statement that the best solution would be to set up a new government, supported by all parties including the NCP and SPLM.
Officials from Sudan’s Communists and the Popular Congress Party, led by Islamist ideologue Hassan al-Turabi, told Reuters their groups were part of the opposition alliance.
Senior SPLM official Yasir Arman told Reuters the government was preparing a legal response to the opposition challenge.
“But the broader point is that the government is legitimate on the basis of the comprehensive peace agreement and the constitution … The CPA says in many places that this is the government that should govern up to the elections.”
