Kenya to join the international community against piracy
Nairobi — President Mwai Kibaki has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment in partnering with the international community in the suppression of the current piracy menace that is inflicting hefty business losses along the Indian Ocean coastal line.
The President noted that the menace of piracy and the subsequent negative effects on the economies of the entire region could jeopardize huge investment potentials together with numerous job opportunities.
He made the remarks during a luncheon hosted in his honour by President Abed Karume of Zanzibar on Friday.
Piracy menace
Kibaki said that Zanzibar enjoys enormous potential in the hospitality industry and tourism opportunities with a spiraling investment effect to the larger East African region.
“Unfortunately, the region has been visited by the menace of piracy and the attendant negative effects on the economies of the entire region. I wish to assure Your Excellency of our commitment to working with the international community in curbing this destructive activity,” the President said.
The Head of State reaffirmed that Kenya considered Zanzibar a vital part of the East African region with a vast potential for pushing the region forward for the common good of all East Africans.
He said, “Given its strategic geoposition, Zanzibar has some of the best opportunities for the tourist industry. I am even aware that many Kenyans have been attracted to explore the charm of this unique spice island. I am confident that the numbers will increase through cooperation between our tourist agencies.”
Cordial relations
President Kibaki reiterated that Kenya remains from solidly committed to the realization of the full integration of the East African Community due to the subsequent immeasurable benefits to the citizens of member states.
“I am confident that the Community’s common spirit of mutual support, grows even further and helps to inspire the much need social-economic progress which our brothers and sisters of the region so much deserve,” noted the President.
He noted that the existing warm and cordial relations among the East African Community members had enabled Kenya companies among them Kenya Commercial Bank expand in various countries including Zanzibar.
President Kibaki also called for explorations in other areas of cooperation with the aim achieving shared prosperity through creation of employment and investments opportunities for citizens of the two nations.
President reaffirmed, “I would, therefore, like to continue working with you, Mr President, to further strengthen our bilateral relations within the context of a focused programme of cooperation and investment.”
President Kibaki expressed great satisfaction the visit had created a fitting moment to learn about the varied commercial activities and interests of the splendid island.
