Meseret Defar shattered the world indoor two-mile record with a superb display of front-running in Saturday's Reebok Boston Indoor Games.

The Ethiopian, who already owns the outdoor version, recorded a time of nine minutes 10.50 seconds in blitzing the field in the second leg of the 2008 Indoor Visa Championships.

Defar led by around two seconds as she reached the halfway point in 4min 38.4sec, and then drew further away from New Zealand's Kim Smith and Jen Rhines.

Smith also smashed the former mark of 9min 23.38sec achieved by the USA's Regina Jacobs at the 2002 meeting, while Rhines was the first American home in 9min 35.29sec.

Craig Mottram broke Haile Gebrselassie's US all-comers 3000m record and his own Australian national best with a time of 7min 34.50sec.

The Australian, who powered away in the latter stages of the race, finished ahead of Gebrselassie's fellow Ethiopian Markos Geneti who clocked 7min 41.81sec.
