Addis Ababa – Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Ethiopia, Associated Press reported.

Nineteen faculty members, students and alumni came to Ethiopia to work with a nonprofit group hoping to improve cattle nutrition and breeding practices. The group administered vaccines and calculated animal weight.

Purdue veterinarian Mark Hilton says animal nutrition is so poor in Ethiopia. He says breeding Ethiopian cattle with American and European breeds can increase fertility rates and produce more milk.

The School of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1959. Since then it has trained nearly 2,800 veterinarians and 800 veterinary technicians.
