Kuwait agrees to provide $63 million to Ethiopia

Addis Ababa — The government of Kuwait has agreed to provide nearly $63 million loan meant for expansion of electricity in the Afar Sate and construction of Wukro-Zalanbessa road in Tigray State.

More than 38 million USD of the fund will be used to expand electricity in Afar region while the balance will be spent on construction of the stated road, According to a statement the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development sent to ENA later on Monday.

The statement said Kuwait has also plan to support construction of Nekemete-Bedelle road in Oromia State. The country previously gave 35 million USD loan for expansion of the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.

Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti Civil Aviation Director General Fawes Al-Farah signed agreement with Ethiopian counterpart Gobena Guangul to increase weekly flight of the Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa to Kuwait to seven days from the previous two days a week.

The working visits of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to Kuwait in 1996 and 2007, as well as the opening of Kuwaiti embassy here in 1997 contributed a lot for vibrant relations between the two countries.

A high level Kuwaiti delegation led by Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is here to pay a three-day working visit.
