Drunken driving suspect crashed into cruiser, police say
A Bethlehem man was driving drunk when he crashed into a Bethlehem Township police car Sunday night in Bethlehem, police said Tuesday.
Ramon Cruz, 50, of 719 Fiot Ave., Bethlehem, will be charged with drunken driving and two traffic summaries for making an improper left turn and not having vehicle insurance, police said.
The accident happened around 8:15 p.m. at Stefko Boulevard and Glenmere Street.
Cruz crashed into the driver’s side door of the police vehicle, which officer Jarod Knouss was driving north on Stefko Boulevard. Cruz was eastbound on Glenmere Street.
Knouss complained of shoulder pain after the crash and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg for treatment.
Police said Cruz refused field sobriety tests and was taken to the DUI center for a blood-alcohol test.
Knouss has a dislocated shoulder and will be out of work for a while, said Bethlehem Township police Chief Daniel Pancoast. He said Knouss was on his way back from picking up evidence at St. Luke’s Hospital-Fountain Hill when the crash occurred.
