Natal Not A Good Fit For Gears Of War, Cliff Bleszinski Says
“If there’s any future Gears products, it’s not the kind of thing you tag onto a game like that, right?”
Count Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski among those who don’t believe that Microsoft’s Project Natal will replace “traditional” gaming. On Major Nelson’s podcast, he briefly discussed the peripherals potential relationship to the Gears of War franchise, and its future in gaming.
“If there’s any future Gears products [exaggerated cough], it’s not the kind of thing you tag onto a game like that, right?” Bleszinski said.
“I’m a fan of… the whole system works amazingly well, they brought it out a few weeks before E3 to give us a peek at it. The driving, you just put your hands forward and steer, and it’s… I don’t feel any lag with it, it’s incredibly crisp and accurate.”
But will it completely replace the way we currently play video games? He doesn’t think so.
“Will it replace traditional gaming? No, but it’s another amazing way that we can expand the gaming experience to a wider audience and enhance what’s already there.”
It appears that Project Natal won’t be playing a very large role in future Gears of War games, but other developers are exploring the possibilities. Bungie has suggested that the forthcoming Halo: Reach could be Natal-enabled, while No More Heroes creator Goichi Suda has hinted that the next installment in the series will be on the Xbox 360, due primarily to the new possibilities afforded by Project Natal.
We’ll have a much better idea of how widely Project Natal is embraced when it arrives sometime late next year.
