Texas chemical plant fire evacuates thousands
BRYAN, Texas — Thousands of central Texas residents are being evacuated and the Texas A&M University campus is closed as a fire burns at a chemical plant that processes explosive ammonium nitrate.
Fire dispatcher Andy Throne says black smoke settled Thursday over Bryan, a city of about 80,000 people about 100 miles north of Houston.
The fire started about noon at the nearby El Dorado Chemical Co., which processes fertilizer and other chemicals. Hospitals say nine people have been treated for respiratory ailments or smoke inhalation possibly related to the fire.
Some evacuees are going to A&M’s basketball facility, about seven miles south of Bryan. A university spokesman say offices and classes are closed as a precaution.
Throne says the evacuation is mandatory but no one is being forced from their homes.
