Is Twitter Losing Respect?
If you follow me on twitter you would probably know that in the last couple of weeks i’ve been having a debate with myself if I still like twitter and the way it works or not. And the saga hasn’t stopped yet. I follow some well know social media “guru’s” and internet marketing “experts” and over the last two months they have been having the same debate that I’m currently having.
@JohnReese and @MikeFilsaime have recently unfollowed about 80,000 people between them on their respective twitter accounts because they are now no longer able to keep up with the conversation but also because of all the Direct Message spam that they constantly are getting from the people they are following. They aren’t the only ones that are starting to get pissed off with how twitter is heading.
My biggest problem with twitter is that fact the the Trends are constantly spammed by stupid quizzes and different applications. That’s not what the Trends are ment for, well that’s what I believe anyway. I believe that they should be used to share the important information that is happening online and offline. I don’t have the problem with all the direct message “spam” as I’m undertaking a different stance on how I use twitter to most other people. Most twits are using the “follow me, follow you” strategy to gain more and more followers, personally I feel that strategy is all about ego, your ego is wanting more followers just so you can say you have X amount of followers. There isn’t anything wrong with that, we all need to get our ego fix but when it comes to something as petty as twitter is it really worth getting so worried about it?
The next two twits that I can see going the same way as John and Mike is @ChrisBrogan and @ProBlogger. They are both in the same boat, they are constantly getting DM “spam”. I know that Darren (ProBlogger) followers everyone back so he can open up Direct Message communication with his followers, but is finding that this is only allowing for his account to be hit with DM’s from http://www.fun140.com and other third party apps to promote their product.
Twitter seriously needs to think about what they are doing otherwise they will start to lose a lot of users very quickly, they are starting to lose respect among their most loyal users and also some of the most influential users. What’s your Twitter strategy and thoughts about the what twitter is doing? Let me know in the comments section if you think Twitter Is Losing Respect.
