Live 120 mm tank round found on Cocoa curb
A scrap metal collector discovered a live 120 mm tank round while rummaging through trash outside a Cocoa home, said Barbara Matthews, police spokeswoman.
And police warn residents that military ordnance retrieved from the site could explode.
Matthews said the tank round was found amid piles of garbage and junk that were left at the curb after a tenant — who apparently collects military items — was evicted from a Hillcrest Drive home. This short street is located off U.S. 1 north of State Road 520, near the Indian River.
The scrap metal collector called Cocoa police this morning. Patrick Air Force Base ordnance disposal officials picked up the tank round, Matthews said.
“If anybody has picked up any trash in the area, check and see. If they’ve got spent casings, that’s one thing. But if it could be a live round, we need to take it out to Patrick Air Force Base,” Matthews said.
To report possible explosives, call the Cocoa Police Department at 639-7620.
