Man Holds DUI Suspect In Backyard For Police
BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A four-hour long manhunt in Brevard County came to an end when a homeowner took down a DUI suspect and waited for police to arrive.
Accused drunk driver Daniel Cody was on the run from law enforcement and was jumping over fences when he made his way into Walter Duester’s backyard in the Ixora Park neighborhood around 4:00am Sunday morning. A Brevard County sheriff’s helicopter recorded night-vision video of the 18-year-old Daniel Cody jumping fences.
Duester was awakened when he heard the helicopter flying over his house.
“I was like, ‘I hope they get this guy because they’re keeping me awake!’” said Duester.
Duester got up and saw the suspect running through his backyard when he looked out his window. Cody was trapped in his yard with the gates locked shut.
“And I say, ‘No, no, not in my backyard,’” recalled Duester.
The homeowner went outside and confronted the suspect, throwing him to the ground and holding him until police officers arrived with handcuffs.
“I said, ‘Freeze, put your hands on your head! Stop, don’t move!’ And he turned around and said, ‘Who are you?’” Duester said.
Duester never answered the suspect.
The former bouncer says this was the fourth time that he has helped police nab a suspect. Police presented Duester with his own video copy of the takedown to enjoy.
