Ethiopia: State says malaria prevalence going down
Awassa – The SNNP state health bureau announced that anti malaria activities carried out in the state have pressed down the prevalence of the disease by 87 percent.
Bureau public relations department head, Emebet Mekonnen told WIC that the prevalence of the malaria disease has significantly dropped owing to the integrated efforts made by the public, governmental and non governmental organizations.
The number of people diagnosed with malaria, which stood at over 360,000 the previous year, has now declined to around 225,000, she said.
Anti mosquito chemicals have been sprayed on close to 418,000 houses in 363 malaria prone kebelles of the state, the head said. The anti malaria efforts enabled over 1.3 million people protected from the epidemic.
Emebet further said that anti malaria efforts have also been carried out through involving over 348,000 people in the state.
Moreover, some 2700 anti mosquito bed nets have been distributed among people residing along the Omo river banks.
