Curt Schilling may run for Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat

With the death of Senator Ted Kennedy, a special election to fill his Senate seat will occur in early 2010. The election must be between January 18 and February 2 according to Massachusetts law.

Among the cast of prospective Republican challengers is former Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling. Schilling won two World Series with the Boston Red Sox (2004, 2007) and has a house in Medfield, a suburb of Boston.

While Schilling may be popular in Massachusetts, Republicans are anything but. The last Republican from Massachusetts to hold a seat in the Senate was Edward Brooke in 1979. Sen. Brooke was also the last elected African American Republican in the Senate.

Schilling campaigned for Sen. John McCain for President in 2008 and President George W. Bush in 2004. For the 2010 election, Schilling has pitched his support for Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker, a socially liberal Republican.

Schilling’s MLB debut was with the Orioles, pitching from 1988 to 1990.
