The Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority is expecting close to one billion birr in tax arrears from what it calls large taxpayers which, it said, have failed to pay taxes they are required to even on the basis of the profit they themselves declared, it was learnt.

The authority has finalized auditing 1250 companies and businesses and served 500 of them with tax assessment, according to Melaku Fenta, the director general of the authority.

The authority is currently auditing over thirteen thousand large taxpayers.

“We are only asking them [the large taxpayers] to pay taxes according to the profit they themselves declared,” the director said Thursday while briefing journalist on recent measures the authority took on alleged tax evaders and related activities.

The director told the press that the authority has started pressing charges against companies it found out evading taxes related to VAT.

There are currently over 30,000 VAT registered companies while the authority expects to register 10,000 more before the current fiscal year winds up.
