MICHIGAN (MSU) — Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts & Sciences and the School of Journalism are have awarded the first Baalu Girma Expendable Scholarship this winter.
This scholarship was established in honor of Baalu Girma, an Ethiopian who graduated in 1963 from Michigan State University with a master’s degree in Political Science and Journalism. After graduation, Baalu returned to Ethiopia where he made significant contributions to the profession as a news correspondent, mentor, and editor-in-chief of several of the nation’s prominent newspapers.
Baalu also possessed great talent for writing fiction and authored several famous novels. He was forward thinking and uncompromising in his writing or reporting.
Baalu Girma was abducted in 1984 by the military government, and to this day he has not been found.
“Our family is very pleased to make this scholarship available in honor of Baalu Girma,” says Zelalem Girma. “To the family, this scholarship represents Baalu’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. It is our hope that Baalu’s story and professional life will inspire others to achieve their best and give back to society as well.”
