Berry Williams booked on charges of second degree murder and felony flight

PHOENIX (Fox Phoenix) — A 47-year-old man has been booked into jail for the senseless death of a 27-year-old Arizona State University (ASU) student from Ethiopia, who was caught in an intersection while the man allegedly ran a red light after robbing a convenience store.

47-year-old Berry Williams has been booked into jail on charges of second degree murder, endangerment, felony flight and theft.

Phoenix Police say that just after midnight on Feb. 1, Williams and a female accomplice stole beer from a convenience store near 58th Ave and McDowell Rd and took off eastbound.

A few moments later, two officers spotted the suspect vehicle at an intersection. The male passenger and a female driver were switching seats — and officers tried to conduct a traffic stop.

Authorities say the man, now the driver, refused to pull over and a police helicopter followed the car at onto eastbound I-10.

The suspect vehicle then exited at N. 27th Ave and subsequently ran several red lights, police say. At 19th Ave and Baseline, Williams allegedly ran another red light and T-boned the victim’s vehicle.

27-year-old Abel Abebe, an ASU student from Ethiopia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of Williams’ alleged accomplice has not been released.
