Addis Ababa — Africa is suitable for the growth and development of air transport industry, said transport and communication state minister, Getachew Mengiste.

Getachew said with its huge population of over 800 million people, the continent is favorable for development of air transport industry.

Speaking at the inaugural of regional conference the minister said in Addis Ababa on Thursday that despite its huge potential Africa accounts less than 5 percent of the world air traffic flow.

“Looking the fact that almost one third of African nations are land locked, it will add for the air transport to become more important mode of transport for our continent,” Getachew said.

Air transport is the only option to make the sector safe and secure as it transports various consumer goods and fresh agricultural products to the international market.

The air transport in Africa currently provides half a million jobs with annual revenue of 12 billion US dollar, the minister said.
