Addis Ababa, (Hawassa) — Hawassa City Mayor has pledged support to NGOs partnering in the activities geared towards speeding up the city’s growth. NGOs have implemented various development activities worth more than 200 million Birr so far in the city.

A consultative forum between government and non-governmental organizations was held on Saturday.

The mayor Desta Daniel said government has carried out numerous activities aimed at upgrading the living standard of the society.

NGOs operating in the city, he said, should invest and coordinate finance, labor and expertise into development, so that they demonstrate their being partners of development.

NGOs, he said, have big roles to play to expedite and sustain the development of the city of Hawassa, a capital city of the South Ethiopia Peoples’ State which is home to 56 nations, nationalities and peoples.

Some 54 NGOs have implemented various community based projects in the areas of education, health, capacity building, anti-HIV/AIDS, urban development, introduction of new technologies, among others.

Some 50,000 residents have benefited from the projects carried out by the NGOs, Daniel said.
