Ethiopia: State launches 20 mln birr flood diversion works

Bahir Dar, – The Amhara state food security coordination and disaster prevention office announced that activities aimed at preventing flood that possibly occur during the rainy season.

Public relations work process owner with the office, Iyassu Mesfin told WIC that construction of flood diversion canals is being carried out with 20 million birr support provided by the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

Food for the hungry, World Vision, Care Ethiopia, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are executing the program, he said.

The flood diversion canal construction work being carried out in Dera, Fogera, Libokemkem and Denbia woredas is expected to be finalized in six months period.

The project also involves transplantation of tree seedlings, clearing of silt as well as construction of bridges.

Renovation of the flood diversion works carried out the previous year by the state’s government with over 4.3 million birr is also part of the program, the work process owner said.
