Addis Abeba — Ethiopia and Sudan on Monday signed an agreement on public transportation that will link the peoples of the two countries, in a sign of growing ties between the two countries..

Kassahun Hailemariam, Director General of Transport Authority representing Ethiopia and Eng. Amin Mohamed, Head Department Ministry of National Highway Authority at Transport Authority office, signed the minute agreement to be approved at the ministerial meeting of both countries scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa.

The road covers over 360 kilometres from Sudan to Gedeharif – Doka – Gelebat – Metema – Gonder – Bahirdar.

Standard asphalt road construction was completed recently and will be officially launched after the protocol agreement signed by both Ministers during the Minister’s conference.

Previously the people of both countries used transportation up to their boarders and transited to other buses in the second country.

This kind of system had been an impact on the effectiveness of economic collaboration.

There is also a plan to expand the agreement from Khartoum to Addis Ababa.

“The diplomatic and economic relationship of Ethiopia and Sudan reached at the highest level that the mass transport agreement has great importance to connecting peoples in economic, social, political collaboration and in creating mutual understanding between two countries,” he added.

The Sudanese delegation consists of 21 members from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, investors, and Transport Associations.

It is the first time for Ethiopia to enter in to such agreement.
