Ethiopia: Over 54,000 farmers engage in irrigation dev’t
Arssi Zone, (Assela) – More than 54,000 farmers have been developing over 24,000 hectares land in 24 woredas of Arssi Zone, Oromia State through irrigation zonal water resource development office said.
The office told ENA on Wednesday that the farmers are cultivating pepper, vegetables and fruits and Pulses on the stated area of land.
It said the farmers have so far harvested 1.5 million quintals output.
The farmers had secured over 250 million Birr income from sale of eight million quintals output during the past two years alone.
Construction of three irrigation projects is well in progress at a cost of 208 million Birr allocated by the regional food security bureau.
The projects are scheduled to be fully finalized within a year.
More than 27,000 farmers embraced in food security program will benefit from the projects, which have capacity to develop over 13,000 hectares land, the office said.
