Ethiopia: Malaria outbreak decreasing in Ethiopia: Ministry

Addis Ababa – The Ministry of Health said malaria epidemic has decreased in the last five years in the country.

Public relation directorate director Ahmed Emano told ENA that the government has exerted utmost effort to curb the epidemic of malaria by distributing Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs), chemicals and undertaking other related preventive activities.

He said 20.4 million ITNs have been distributed to over 13,000 malaria prone areas within two to three years.

The director said radio programs in different vernaculars have been aired to teach effective use of ITNs.

Ahmed said training have been given to professionals on prevention of malaria epidemic.

More than 24,000 health extension workers were also trained and deployed to improve malaria case management at community level.

He said Ethiopia has made a considerable progress since 2005 towards scaling up malaria control interventions at national level.

The director said the death rate related to malaria has decreased by 55 percent.

He said high level training is offered presently at Addis Ababa University that would enable to make national prediction and surveillance in order to take precaution.
