Ethiopia: Ethiopian advises Air Ethiopia to change its name
The Ethiopian Airlines recently advised the newly established domestic airline, Air Ethiopia, to change its name.
Executives of Ethiopian who encouraged the establishment of the new private airline said some customers and insurance companies were cenfusing Ethiopian with Air Ethiopia adding it was advisable for Air Ethiopia to change its name. A senior executive with Ethiopian told The Reporter that insurers of the company were not happy with the name of the new company.
Though Air Ethiopia has the right to use its name, the management has accepted the request made by Ethiopian to change its name. Accordingly, the management is contemplating to name the new airline “Addis Air”.
Captain Abera Lemi, an Ethiopian pilot who used to work for Ethiopian Airlines, established Air Ethiopia last October. Air Ethiopia is now providing passenger and cargo, ambulance, charter, and non-scheduled flight services between Addis Ababa and regional towns and remote areas. The company is providing scheduled flight service to Mekelle and Bahir Dar. The company flies Tuesday and Friday to Mekelle and Monday and Thursday to Bahir Dar.
Air Ethiopia has acquired a 19-seater aircraft called Beach 1900 from an American aviation company with a lease purchase agreement. The company became operational in March this year.
