Ethiopia: Farmers secure over 108 mln. Birr from sale of 516,000 quintals rice

Mizan – More than 3,500 farmers in Gurra Ferda Woreda, Bench Majji Zone of South Ethiopia Peoples’ State have secured over 108 million Birr income from sale of 516,000 quintals of rice, zonal agriculture and rural development department said.

Crop development and protection expert with the department, Berhanu Alemayehu told ENA that the farmers cultivated the rice on over 13,000 hectares land during 2000/2001 E.C harvest season.

The expert said the farmers have managed to improve their livelihoods.

Berhanu said rice development was launched on 955 hectares land for the first time in the woreda during 1995/96 E.C. harvest season.

There are plans to cultivate rice on over 14,000 hectares land in eight woredas including Gurra Ferda. More than 4,000 farmers will take part in the rice development activity, he said

Over 702,000 quintals rice is expected to be harvested from the stated area of land, he said.
