Ethiopia: Lalibela secures 4.7 mln birr from tourism
Dessie – The Lalibela town culture and tourism office announced that it has obtained over 4.7 million birr revenue from tourists who visited Lalibela rock hewn churches and other tourist attractions in the area.
Tourism development and promotion officer with the office, Habtamu Tesfaw told WIC that 20,715 foreign and local tourists came to the area over the past 10 months.
The 18 rock hewn churches situated in Lalibela town and its surrounding areas as well as the Abune Yosef Mountain were among the tourist attractions visited by the tourists.
The number of local and foreign tourists coming to the area is steadily growing, the officer said, recalling that 21,641 tourist’s cme to the area the previous year.
Installation of various infrastructure facilities is being carried out in a bid to make the Lalibela town more conducive to tourists, he said.
Meanwhile, survey and studies are being conducted by teams of archeologists to explore additional tourist attractions in the area, the expert added.
