Negele – Lark, one of the endemic birds in Ethiopia, has become an endangered species, a non-governmental organization engaged in historical relic, biodiversity, and environmental protection activities disclosed.
The population of this unique Ethiopian bird, which is found only in Liben Woreda of the Oromia State, has been alarmingly declining other the last three years.
The NGO made the remark on Friday at relevant workshop held in Nergele town of the regional state. It attributed the problem mainly to drastic climatic change, deforestation, soil erosion, and lack of the necessary foliage.
The bird will soon be extinct unless federal and regional governments in collaboration with other pertinent bodies take corrective measures toward reversing the problem, the organization warned.
Ethiopia, which is a signatory to the preservation of biodiversity resources, is a home of more than 80 bird species out of which some of the birds live only in the country.
