Ethiopia: May 28 lays firm ground for expansion, quality of education in Ethiopia: Ministry
Addis Ababa – The Ministry of Education reiterated that the existing status of education service in Ethiopia is the result of the Victory of May 28.
Ethiopia has registered observable achievements in ensuring expansion of the education service as well as in improving the quality of the service following May 28, foreign and public relations department head with the ministry, Abera Abate told ENA.
Primary education enrollment in Ethiopia has reached over 15 million in 2000 academic year from only 3.1 million prior to May 28, he said. He said primary education service coverage has reached 95.6 percent from only 26.2 percent during the reported time.
Similarly, secondary education enrollment in the country has reached more than one million from close to 371,000 some 15 years ago, he said.
Boys’ and girls’ enrollment in secondary education level reach 44 and 29 percent at present as the number of secondary schools in the country has increased 1,087 from only 330 during the last 15 years.
Moreover, the number of students enrolled in 230 state-owned and 288 private higher learning institutions has been raised to more than 229,000 from only over 2,000 some 13 years ago.
The number of universities established in Ethiopia reached 21 at present from only two before May 28 boosting national intake of higher learning institutions to more than 79,000 from only 6,604 earlier.
Meanwhile, wide-ranging activities, aimed at improving the quality and relevance of education, have been underway as per the Education Sector Development Program of the nation, he added.
