Addis Ababa – The Ethiopian Higher Education Relevance and Quality Agency (HERQA) announced that it has carried out accreditation and renewal of certificates for 184 higher learning institutions in the country over the last nine months.
Director General of the Agency, Dr. Tesfaye Teshome told WIC that as the demand of higher education is increasing in the country the agency has provided accreditations for over 231 higher education programs only this budget year.
After scrutinizing applications it received over the budget year the agency granted 86 pre-accreditations and 76 accreditations, while it has renewed accreditations for 43 institutions.
Meanwhile the agency, during the reported period has revoked accreditations given earlier for 46 programs as they were found to be below the standard.
The Director General pointed out the agency rejected 50 percent of applications for accreditation submitted last year.
He also indicated that the agency is conducting studies and gathering feedbacks from employer organizations about competence of graduates of private educational institutions. The study is expected to play an important role in the effort made to improve quality of education, he added.
The Director General also said that the agency is undertaking various activities to ensure quality of education by designing education quality package.
