Ethiopian Review

The African Union has issued an outrageous statement urging the UN Security Council to “impose sanctions against Eritrea”. The illegal and utterly irresponsible statement, issued in Addis Ababa in the name of the so-called “Peace and Security Council” of the organization, was made on the basis of groundless accusations against Eritrea, without ascertaining the facts, and without even consulting the current Chairman of the African Union.

Eritrea is fully aware of where, how and by whom this irresponsible and cynical flouting of the rule of law was conceived in the first place, and, through which machinations it has passed. This deplorable act does not also represent an isolated incident. It is symptomatic of the fundamental structural malaise that has gripped the African Union right from its inception. The sad fact is the African Union has been reduced to, and is merely serving as, a convenient umbrella for certain external powers to meddle, with the collusion of a few internal collaborators, in the affairs of the organization in order to compound the various crises that afflict our continent.

Eritrea strongly rejects the irresponsible and illegal statement issued in the name of the African Union.
