Ethiopia: Gov’t said aggressively working to conserve wildlife
Harar – The Ethiopian Wildlife Development and Conservation Authority said the government is working to protect wildlife from extermination and boost the country’s benefit from the sector.
Authority Director General, Dr. Kifle Aregaw told WIC that the authority is working to further enhance wildlife development and conservation works with a view to conserving the diverse and important wildlife resources of the country.
Dr. Kifle said involving the community residing around parks and ensuring their benefits from the sector is one of the strategies designed to conserve Ethiopia’s unique wildlife resources.
He further said that the authority is working for the full implementation of policies and legislations adopted to protect the country’s wildlife resources from damage.
Dr Kifle added that along the protection works various activities would also be carried out to attract investors in the sector. In a related development, the number of parks in the country has jumped up to 16 from only nine previously, the director general said.
The increase in number of parks will help conserve Ethiopia’s unique wildlife and animal species facing danger of extinction, he said.
