Ethiopia: Ethiopia should make use of its huge renewable energy resource: Minister

Addis Ababa – Ethiopia should make use of its rich renewable energy including hydro and steam power more than ever, Minister of Mines and Energy, Alemayehu Tegenu said.

Speaking at a day long consultative workshop on renewable energy here on Tuesday, the minister said Ethiopia has not yet benefited from its rich renewable energy.

Alemayehu said the country should involve investors to utilize its renewable energy sources properly and meet the growing demand of energy in the country.

The minister said the workshop is organized to discuss on the initial cost of electric power with investors desiring to engage in renewable energy development.

Power supply program aimed at distributing electric power service among rural parts of the country is being implemented. Hundreds of rural towns are getting access to the service through the program.

The minister said the country should further make use of its renewable energy to achieve its plan to distribute the service .

Ethiopian Electric Agency General Manager, Getahun Moges on his part said investors should participate in generating electric power from renewable energy sources as it requires huge capital.

Getahun said the discussion is significant to encourage investors and set the initial cost of power.
