Ethiopia: Commission presents nine months report to house

Addis Ababa – Support of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has been bearing fruits in enabling the government to produce timely reports on human rights in accordance with the international conventions on which the nation is a signatory .

The commission said it is possible to produce the report in time if the government assigns a permanent responsible body to produce the report.

The commission presented nine months report to the House of Peoples’ Representatives here on Tuesday.

The commission said the nation should report to the United Nations and the African human rights institutions about the problems encountered and the ongoing efforts to respect human rights

Encouraging results have been registered as a result of the efforts the commission made in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African office of UN human rights commission .

The report noted that activities are underway to finalize human rights reports .

The commission has also been working with the Ministry of Education to raise awareness of students on human rights, Commissioner Kassa Gebrehiwot said.

Legal and Administration Affairs Standing Committee with the house commended the report of the commission.

The committee urged the commission to speed up producing of its own neutral human rights report and give attention to environmental protection as the issue has been considered as part of human rights.

Members of the house posed various questions and comment on the report at the 43rd regular session of 4th year tenure of the house .
