Ethiopia: Ministry working to boost agricultural productivity

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD) said it is working to raise the awareness of executive bodies on government’s policies and strategies so as to support the efforts being exerted to boost agricultural productivity by up to 50 per cent.

Employees of the Ministry colorfully celebrated the 18th anniversary of May 28 victory on Monday.

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, Tefera Derbew on the occasion said awareness and executive capacity of development workers and experts engaged in the sector should be scaled up in order to attain the plan set to enhance agricultural productivity.

The ministry is introducing new technologies and promoting experiences of successful farmers, he said, the active involvement of researchers and development workers is indispensable in this regard.

Public relations head with MoARD, Tarekegn Tsige on his part said that more than 54,000 agricultural professionals trained at 25 agricultural and vocational training institutions were deployed in various kebelles over the past 18 years.

He said 7,400 farmers training centers were built and went operational with a view to upgrading farmers’ skill. The annual agricultural productivity has reached to 178 million quintals as well, he added.

He said the ministry would aggressively work to realize the renaissance of the country through efficiently implementing policies and strategies of the government.
