Addis Ababa – About 98 percent of work on the construction of the Gilgel Gibe II hydro electric power project being carried out by Salini Construttori, an Italian contractor has been completed.

Engineer Simegnew Bekele, Manager of the Gilgel Gibe II project with the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) told WIC reporter on the site that boring of the 26 kilometers tunnel, with 7.1 meters diameter, has already been finalized.

The tunnel that passes under the Fofa mountain channels the water already impounded and used by the Gilgel Gibe II, through a 26Km long tunnel.

The Gilgel Gibe II project, which has an installed capacity of generating 420 MW electric power is expected to be finalized and go operational in few months time, according to the Project Manager.

About 4,000 people, of whom 95 percent are Ethiopians, are currently working on the project, he said, adding that the remaining are experts who came from 30 different countries.

The project, which is expected to considerably boost the country’s power generation capacity, is worth 370 million euros including the installation of transmission lines and sub-stations, he added.
