Ethiopia: Women Caucus discusses boosting female journalists’ participation
Women Caucus of the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) held discussion on as to how enhance the participation of female journalists. At a half-day discussion organized in the House, HPR Women Caucus Deputy Chairperson Netsanet Asfaw presented a paper under the theme: “Women and Media.” Netsanet, who is also Deputy Government Whip in the HPR, said the number of female journalists is very minimal. The trend is a worldwide practice and female journalists account only 23 percent. The number of female journalist is not more than 21 per cent in Africa. No meaningful effort has been made to address the problem. The government has been exerting utmost efforts to address the overall problems of women in the last two years. Encouraging results have been registered and the role of media was central. The chairperson urges women themselves to play a leading role in promoting and empowering women.
