Ethiopia: Nation secures 277 million USD from sale of coffee
Addis Ababa – The nation has secured more than 277 million USD from export of 98,000 tons of coffee during the past ten months, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said.
The ministry told ENA on Tuesday that the amount of coffee exported to the world market during the stated period is greater than that of same time in the previous year.
The ministry anticipates better volume and income from coffee export in the coming months.
The ministry recalled that the fact that coffee buyers could not live up with their contract due to international financial crisis, and problems created by some coffee suppliers, who acted against the law, had put a negative impact on coffee trade at the beginning of the budget year .
However, due attention and support given by the government to the sector turned the situation to the better, it said. The government controlled 18,000 tons coffee which was intended to be exported illegally.
Of the total export of coffee 10,361 tons was exported through Ethiopian Commodity Exchange. Over 237 million birr was obtained from sale of the stated amount of coffee.
The ministry called on all stakeholders to work jointly to further increase foreign currency earning by making use of existing positive international coffee trade and local conducive environment.
