Newly elected Indian government keen to scale up cooperation with Ethiopia: Ambassador Genet
Addis Ababa – The newly elected Indian Government is keen to further bolster existing Ethio-Indian relations, Ethiopian Ambassador to India Genet Zewde said.
In an exclusive interview with ENA in New Delhi recently, the ambassador said India is enthusiastic to scale up assistance to Ethiopia in capacity building, education, and other sectors.
She said economic and diplomatic relations of the countries have been strengthened more than ever. Number of Indian investors has been increasing from time to time owing to Ethiopian favorable investment opportunities.
The ambassador said the Ethiopian government is working to balance trade exchanges between the two countries. Genet said Ethiopian business persons should exert efforts to increase volume and quality of products they export to India so as to balance the trade exchanges.
Genet said the trade exchanges between the countries will increase if the project launched to export Potash to India becomes successful.
India has given quota and tariff free opportunity to Ethiopia. The countries will sign agreement enabling to avoid double taxation.
The amount of loan India has given to Ethiopia for sugarcane development and rural electrification projects is a record breaking compared with the amount the country has provided to other countries.
Ethiopia is also the first beneficiary of tele-medicine and tele-education of the agreement 18 African countries signed with India. Currently the Addis Ababa University, Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital and other health institutions are benefiting from the service,
With regard to cultural ties, the ambassador said, the scholarship India has been offering to Ethiopian students will further strengthen people to people relation between the countries.
