Ministry of Health says Ethiopia on right track to meet health sector goals
Addis Ababa – The Ministry of Health (MoH) said Ethiopia is on the right track to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target in the health sector ahead of the set time.
Public Relations Directorate Director with the Ministry, Ahmed Imano told WIC that the ministry is working aggressively to attain the national goal set to eradicate poverty through scaling up achievements of the health sector.
He said the ministry is registering remarkable results in preventing tuberculosis (TB), malaria, HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases, while the efforts being made to prevent diseases proved 100 percent successful.
He attributed the success to the realization of health extension program consisting of about 16 health packages as well as deployment of close to 30,000 female health extension works in each kebele across the country.
He said the ministry has finalized recruiting trainees to train close to 5,000 female nurses with a view to preventing communicable and other diseases in urban areas.
The ministry is exerting efforts to build more health facilities since the existing health stations and hospitals in the country are not sufficient to provide efficient service to the entire population.
He said the ministry, in collaboration with the Clinton Foundation, set standards for 40 hospitals on the basis of the service they provided to the public.
