Ethiopia: Ethiopian Lidia Schaefer nominated for CNN HEROES award
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopian native Lidia Schaefer has been nominated for CNN HEROES award for constructing a secondary school in her hometown after selling her car and properties in USA.
CNN reported that Lidia has constructed the secondary school in her birth place Feres Maye, Tigray Region after selling her house and car.
Lidia told CNN that she was initiated to build the school after witnessing children in her village travel three hours a day on foot to attend secondary school.
Asked by CNN’s Larry King how she built the school, Lidia said “First I started with my money. I worked six days and night for 92 hours. I raised 58,000 USD; I sold my house 200 USD and gave up my car.”
The school constructed in 2006 has 16 classrooms, laboratory, and library. More than 1500 children are attending education at the school.
“Lidia helped me to continue my education. This is a great chance for me,” one of the students of the school told CNN.
