2nd largest flower farm in Ethiopia inaugurated

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – - The second largest flower farm around Woliso town of Oromia State, which is owned by an Indian business company, Surya Blossoms, was officially inaugurated on Sunday.

The farm, which is a sister company of Karuturi Global Company, has already started exporting its products.

At the inaugural ceremony, officials from the federal and regional governments expressed readiness provide all the necessary support to the flower farm.

Trade and Industry Minister, Girma Biru, Oromia State Chief, Abadulla Gemeda, Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Gurjit Sing, and Chairman of Karuturi Global Limited, Surya Rao jointly inaugurated the flower farm.

Girma on the occasion said participation of Indian investors has been growing remarkably during recent years. Indian investment capital in Ethiopia has reached over 4 billion USD.

The minister said ambassadors of the two countries have contributed a lot to attract Indian entrepreneurs making Indian entrepreneurs become among the top most foreign investors in Ethiopia.

The flower farm will benefit Ethiopia through creating jobs for citizens and earring foreign currency since the farm remains the second largest farm in the country, Girma said.

Oromia State Chief, Abadula Gemeda also expressed readiness to work with the company since the firm has constructed public facilities to local communities besides creating jobs for lots of persons in diffrent parts of the state .

Ambassador Gurjit on his part said Indian investment is blossoming in Ethiopia, especially in the last one and half years and expected to be doubled shortly.

Despite the global crisis, Indian investment projects have been flourishing in Ethiopia, he said, adding the giant Indian agro-investment project launched in Gambella region by the same company is a case in point.

Surya Rao also said his firm received close to 400 hectares of land in 2007 and has already started exporting 17 varieties flowers to Middle East, Europe, USA and Holland. The firm exports some 40,000 flowers a day.

He said the company has so far developed 25 hectares of land creating some 700 jobs. The firm will be developing the 400 hectares until 2010.

The firm is constructing a hospital, school, and play ground to local communities at present, according to the flower farm manager.
