Dr Alemayehu is a great writer and maybe a great debater. However, if he and those of us who support this bill in the US congress succeed, I don’t think Meles is going to tremble in his boots. What will, in fact, happen is that the robust economic activity that we see in Ethiopia today will slow down considerably. Life will go on for Meles’s government with hardly any change for the well to do in Ethiopia but it will be much worse for those who might have benefited from development. Some of the well to do may even cheer because inflation will slow down... However, School construction, which has been going on at an extremely fast rate, will slow down or stop. New universities will not be built. Highways and rural hospitals will not be built. Electrification will slow down or stop. At that point, if nothing happens, we should move to the next phase and have Rep. Payne sponsor a new bill to cut off food aid. That should take care of Meles. He will say that he does not want to be blamed for the starvation of Ethiopians and resign. We will then have our wonderful and wise leaders and democracy will reign and we will then live happily ever after.

WE KNOW THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. NEXT ………??

If we are lucky, the Democrats may succeed in electing one of their own as the US President in 2008. Presumably, he will be even more sympathetic to the idea of bringing democracy to Ethiopia and may be persuaded by Dr. Alemayehu and the like, to arm CUD, OLF, ONLF and others to liberate us from Meles or better still send the US Marines to throw out (or hang) Meles and his cohorts and fix Ethiopia in the mould that that meets Dr. Alemayehu prescription.

Ethiopia has been blessed by intellectuals such as D. Senay Like, Dr. Negede Gobeze, Dr. Haile Fida etc. etc. and many more in the old EPRP. Their philosophies may vary and their quick fix for Ethiopia may have different recipe but their certainty about their righteous cause left no room for those who oppose them. They were always ready to burn Ethiopia to the ground in order to save it. Nothing practical makes sense to them. Co-existence is like treachery to them. Their opposition must be eradicated. Because they possess all the truth, there is no truth left for their adversary to possess. Soon after their victory, they will go after each other with even greater zeal for the sole possession of the truth to form another more orthodox inner circle which claims itself to be more genuine.

THAT IS WHY THE WORLD DOES NOT HAVE INTELECTUAL LEADERS WORTH ANYTHING. WE NEED PROBLEM SOLVERS NOT INTELECTUAL RAH! RAH! FOR ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY EXPERIMENT.

WE SHOULD NOT STARVE ETHIOPIANS TO GIVE THEM DEMOCRACY. IT WILL HAVE A BITTER TASTE WHICH WE HAVE ALL TASTED BEFORE.
