It is sad to see that any effort put forth by those who are brave enough to try to make a difference so savagely brutalized. Everyone who has attempted to do any kind of business in the current environment knows that even getting a piece of paper signed is a monumental accomplishment. Having come so far doing whatever it takes to build something useful for the country should be commended. Constructive criticism is ok. As the documentary has mentioned, it is too early to measure the success or failure of ECX. This very brave, innovative Ethiopian lady has tried to set the infrastructure in place. The question one should ask is, what can I do to help the "illiterate farmer" utilize this system. So that Now that the infrastructure is there how can all of us who are commenting here help and make it better, recognize its true deficiencies and do something about it. Blind hatred of the current government is not enough to build the country. Getting involved and trying to solve some of these monumental problems Ethiopia is facing is a not only a noble thing to do but also the responsibility of each and every one of us.

There something we Ethiopians do not understand. There is this saying" ye moteleshe kereto, ye gedeleshe bela" newe negeru. There was no a single time that Melese and his colleges worried about Ethiopia or the Ethopian poor people. It is always how we are going to make more money and abonden Ethiopia at the final time . Let us not ask any question about their intention or have doubts about their goal. Rather let us plan for a general boycoat to paralize the economy by not going to Ethiopia from all over the world and dig his grave.

yes ,i agree it!

The PBS documentary was a well orchestrated propaganda piece and that is all it was. One shouldn't expect a commodity exchange system, which by definition needs a market that operates freely from state interference, to work in a failed state such as Ethiopia whose leaders pay lip service to free trade but do everything in their power to discourage and thwart any semblance of a free market. The recent fiasco with Melese and the coffee traders is a prime example of government interference with the free play of the market.

I don't think the coffee growers, processors, and traders trust the current government with their hard earned product.Trust is earned and it cannot be enforced by the barrel of the gun and harsh policies.

I don't think Eleni is naive enough to believe the ECX will transform the lives of the Ethiopian farmers while at the same time replenishing the hard currency the government is currently obsessed with.

Nice try but no cigar yet

it is good exhcnagewebsite

The exchange market in India is functioning better, in part, because it earned the the traders trust and commodities flow through the market on a voluntary basis. For that matter, all exchanges are made up of groups of traders that come together voluntarily. You can't just impose a market and then confiscate people's properties.

The ethnofascists controlling and looting Ethiopia will not stop short of auctioning the whole country and selling it to the highest bidder. The ethnofascists are selling and have already put on sale the most fertile and productive lands of the country. They are also selling young Ethiopian girls as maids to the rich gulf and other countries in the middle east. These businesses (selling young girls and land) are growing annd becoming profitable and Ethiopians should expect the ethnofascists to establish some kind of exchange for them. Ethiopia is now Africa`s leading exporter of young girls to the middle east and this transaction in humans is in contravention of the International Humanitarian Laws. Thus, the ethnofascists are in violation of International Laws and should be held accountable for the sales, enslavements and sufferings of thousands of young girls.

Dr. Seid Hassan has clearly articulated the problems with ECX and the failure by Dr. Eleni tell the Ethiopian people how the ECX could “transform the Ethiopian economy.” It is absolutely true that the majority of Ethiopians in rural areas, even in some large towns, don't even understand what ECX is all about. yes, in the long run it may produce some kind of results, should hands changed, but for now, we have to assume it is all part of larger scheme to loot the fewer remaining resources of the Ethiopian people.

Good job Dr. Seid

As much I despise these hoodlums who turned up from the rotten woodwork of Dedebit, I think institution such as this modern ways is the right thing to do now and will be beneficial to the economy of the nation in the long run. Certain commodity exchanges and stock markets in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia and other similar springing economies were commenced during despotic regimes that used to rule these countries with iron fists. They are all breathing much better now in terms of the rights of the individual. China is another most recent example. I don't deny the fact that the establishment of such institutions had made some of the ruling elites filthy rich but it has also helped prop up the size of the middle class in all of them. In our case, erecting new dams and establishments of modern capitalist institutions are and will be to the benefits of the population in the long run.

I have read several articles written by this qualified intellectual on this website in the past. They are all accurate and need to be given special attention. He is one of those special sons of our country. He is a national treasure. I wish there is a foundation founded by the Diaspora the will recognize the talent and accomplishments of such golden sons and daughters of Ethiopia such as Dr. Seid Hassan. Yes...I said Ethiopia out loud. I did not say, Tigray, Somalia, Oromia etc... Ethiopia, period!!!!!

The ECX is one other institution by which woyane is legitimizing the highway robbery of Ethiopian peasants through brokering of coffee, hide and other leather products, livestock - in addition trading of other commodities robbed from Ethiopians in partnership with Al Amoudi such as Gold and other precious metals.

Most of all Woyane is also using ECX to legitimize and bring into world markets the money looted from Ethiopian treasury. Therefore, Eleni is nothing but a Woyane Economic Cadre - who is fast becoming an instrument of Woyane looting of Ethiopia.

Gebrehiwot Baykedegn rocks! Save Eshetu Chole, the only substantive economist Ethiopia has ever produced is G. Baykedegn.

I have been wondering, for long, why Ethiopia has been unable to produce an economist who is substantive. Now I can see they can't even properly articulate an article to be published on any website, and I am not surprised I haven't been able to see a substantive article written by an a person of Ethiopian decent being published in a journal or in any form.

God where is your mercy?
